Terms of Use

Last updated: August 4, 2026

In plain terms. The Lit Librarian is a free reading suggestion tool. Use it to find books you might enjoy. It is not a diagnostic test, not professional educational advice, and it comes with no guarantees.

1. Agreement

By using thelitlibrarian.com you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the site. The site is operated by Black and Yellow Enterprise LLC, with Jason Hayes as project lead.

2. What the service is

The Lit Librarian asks questions about a reader and suggests books, comics, magazines, graphic novels, and audiobooks that may suit them. It also offers an optional reading check that estimates reading pace and comprehension. Everything is offered free of charge and is currently a preview release, which means features may change, break, or be removed without notice.

3. Reading level estimates are not assessments

The reading check produces a rough, self-guided estimate meant to improve book suggestions. It is not a standardized test, a formal reading assessment, a diagnosis, or a substitute for evaluation by a teacher, reading specialist, or clinician. Do not rely on it to make educational placement or medical decisions. If you have concerns about a reader's progress, speak with a qualified professional.

4. Recommendations are suggestions only

Book suggestions are generated automatically and will not always be right. Content suitability varies enormously between readers, families, and communities. Parents and caregivers are responsible for reviewing whether a particular title is appropriate for their reader before buying or borrowing it.

5. Lit Librarian Plus subscriptions

Lit Librarian Plus is an optional paid subscription. It adds local library availability links to your book matches. Everything else on the site stays free.

Payment. Payments are taken by Stripe on Stripe's own hosted checkout pages. We do not see or store your card details. By subscribing you also accept Stripe's terms for the payment itself.

Renewal. A subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period at the then-current price until you cancel. The price and billing period shown at checkout are the ones that apply to you.

Cancelling. You can cancel at any time using the link in your Stripe receipt, or by emailing us. Cancelling stops future charges. Access continues until the end of the period you have already paid for.

Refunds. If Plus is not what you expected, email us within 30 days of a charge and we will refund it. Beyond that we handle refund requests case by case.

Price changes. We will tell you by email before any price change takes effect, and you can cancel before it does.

What Plus does and does not do. Plus builds a search link into WorldCat, a public library catalogue. It tells you which libraries report holding a title. It cannot reserve, borrow, or guarantee a copy, and library records are maintained by the libraries themselves, so they can be out of date. If WorldCat becomes unavailable, we may replace it with a comparable service.

6. Affiliate links

The Lit Librarian participates in the Amazon Associates Program. Book links on this site are affiliate links, and we may earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you. Commissions do not influence which titles are suggested to you. Prices, availability, and product details are controlled by Amazon and may change at any time.

7. Third-party sites

Links to Amazon, WorldCat, and any other outside site are provided for convenience. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, availability, pricing, or policies. Once you follow a link, that site's own terms and privacy policy apply.

8. Acceptable use

Please use the site as intended. Do not attempt to disrupt, overload, scrape at scale, reverse engineer, or gain unauthorized access to the site or the systems behind it, and do not use it in a way that breaks the law or infringes anyone's rights.

9. Intellectual property

The name The Lit Librarian, the site design, the wording, and the underlying code belong to Black and Yellow Enterprise LLC unless stated otherwise. Book titles, cover art, author names, and other third-party material remain the property of their respective owners and are referenced for identification only.

10. Younger readers

This site is designed for families to use together. If a reader is a minor, a parent, caregiver, or teacher should supervise their use of the site, including the optional microphone feature and any links that lead to outside retailers.

11. No warranty

The site is provided on an as-is and as-available basis. We make no promise that it will be accurate, complete, uninterrupted, error free, or fit for any particular purpose, and we disclaim all warranties to the fullest extent the law allows.

12. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Black and Yellow Enterprise LLC and anyone working on the project will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive losses arising from your use of the site, including decisions made on the basis of a reading estimate or a book suggestion. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

13. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the project develops. The date at the top of the page shows when it was last revised, and continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised version.
